Extending the Boundaries of What is Possible: New Product for 2025
March 19th, 2025

The news is out! StageRight’s newest product is here, and we are already working on the first project. Debuting at USITT in Columbus, Ohio, StageRight had the opportunity to showcase the adaptability, construction, and innovation of our newest pit filler and stage extension.
What is a pit filler?
A pit filler is a modular stage system designed to cover an orchestra pit in a theater or concert hall, creating a level surface that extends the stage. This allows for more flexibility in how the performance space is used — for example, adding extra stage area for large productions, providing standing room for a choir, or even converting the pit into audience seating.
How can a pit filler change a theater space?
A pit filler can dramatically transform a theater space by adding versatility and adaptability to the stage layout. Here’s how:
1. Expanding the Stage: By covering the orchestra pit, a pit filler extends the stage area, making room for larger sets, dance ensembles, or choirs. This is especially useful for musicals or performances requiring extra space.
2. Creating Additional Seating: Some pit fillers can be configured to add rows of audience seating, increasing the theater’s capacity without permanent structural changes. This is perfect for sold-out shows or special events.
3. Seamless Transitions: A well-designed pit filler blends into the existing stage, keeping sightlines clear and maintaining a polished, professional look. It’s a great way to shift from an orchestral setup to a dramatic performance without a complicated teardown.
4. Safety and Accessibility: Covering the pit minimizes the risk of accidents during rehearsals or performances, ensuring a smooth, even surface for performers and crew.
What is different about this new pit filler?
While this model remains modular and easy to assemble, it introduces a whole new approach. Traditionally, our pit fillers have mirrored our staging systems, using standard stage supports and decks to extend the stage and cover the orchestra pit.
The new pit filler is designed with a column and bracket system in mind. Like before, this new pit filler is easy to install. It is designed with aluminum columns for a lightweight structure, but steel brackets and cross beams reinforce rigidity. The modular staging platforms that drop into place make it easy to set up and store when necessary.
StageRight’s new pit filler combines strong yet lightweight construction, easy assembly, and a versatile design. It expands what’s possible on stage while simplifying behind-the-scenes operations. Whether you’re hosting a sold-out musical, a packed concert, or a community theater performance, this pit filler adds adaptability and innovation to every show. The pit filler can span up to 14 feet in depth before another row of column legs for understructure is needed for support. It will also meet the industry standard of L/360 and our staging standards of 150 pounds of uniform vertical load per square foot. This frees up any space between the rows of columns for storage beneath the stage.
