Types of Seating Risers and Where They’re Most Often Used

September 9, 2021

Audience seating risers are used for many different types of events in a variety of different venues. Depending on the facility, there are a few options available when it comes to seating your audience members. This post will cover the 3 main types of seating risers in the industry and will cover when and where you may see them.

Motorized

First and foremost, we’ll talk about telescopic seating. More specifically, we’ll talk about motorized telescopic seating. This option is able to be set-up quickly and easily with the push of a button. When not in use, they store compactly up against a wall. This solution is ideal for multi-purpose spaces when there’s limited set-up time and a small crew.

You’ll most often see this in arenas, though they’re continuing to become more popular in black box theatres. Arenas are the most common use case here because of the change-over from concerts to sporting events. These different events require vastly different seating arrangements. Here’s an article that includes a video and goes into even more detail about telescopic risers in arenas.

Manual

Manual retractable seating risers are similar to the telescopic option because they both fold out. The primary difference here is the manual part. Also, depending on the specific system you have, this option may be easier to move around to different areas of your multi-purpose space. Check out the picture below of it being used in an exhibit hall that was converted for a basketball game.

The entire system is able to be rolled into place and then rolled away once the event is complete. That is not the case when using telescopic risers that are fixed in place.

Demountable

Just like with the manual retractable seating risers, demountable seating risers are portable. They can be completely disassembled and transported to different facilities entirely.

This is an ideal solution if your storage space is limited or if you will need to transport them regularly. One thing you will need to make sure you consider is your set-up time and the size of your crew. The larger the crew, the less time it’ll take to set-up.

Conclusion

No matter the solution you opt to go with, it’s important to make sure your system will be tailored to your specific requirements. When it comes to seating risers, there really isn’t a one-size-fits-all fix because your patrons deserve the best. Any one of these can be customized to your space.
